Anya

This wasn’t at all how Anya expected this to go. Usually, when she hooked up with a girl, she felt refreshed and free. Like it was out of her system, and she rarely thought about the girl afterwards, unless they happened to run into each other unexpectedly. The exact opposite seemed to be happening with Charlotte, however. Even with the extra day before work, she still found herself running over the evening again and again. In the moments when she was making herself breakfast or lounging, she imagined different ways to make Charlotte happy. It was maddening.

Even now, she had more than enough work on her plate, but she found herself staring out of the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of golden hair as she handed out coffee. Her most immediate plan of action was to take a step back, knowing that it would be much harder to be taken in by the girl if she resented her.

Charlotte had texted her that night to say she had made it home, and again at the tasteful hour of 11 the next day to thank her again for dinner. She had managed well enough to restrain herself from responding, but she knew she could crack at any minute. What an inconvenience.

Anya had been through this same scenario before; when she had let herself develop feelings for a girl. The honeymoon phase was intoxicating, and she could picture the future that she had dreamed of ever since she was little. The ability to be both a powerhouse in the workforce and having a wife to come home to at the end of the day. The type of woman that made all of the hard work and long hours worth it, because they would reap the rewards together. But it never took long for the expectations to exceed what she was able to give. She felt like she was very generous, both in and outside of the bedroom. She gave elaborate, thoughtful gifts, and when they would have date nights, they would be magically curated experiences. Still, they always wanted more. It wasn’t enough for her to whisk them away on giant vacations twice a year, they wanted her to cut back on her hours every day. And they would accuse her of giving gifts in place of giving affection. She couldn’t help that her affection came in the form of gifts. She couldn’t, wouldn’t, go through that again. She was old enough and had gone through it enough times to know there wasn’t anything better out there. She couldn’t have it all, and she made her choice.

Still, the memory of Charlotte’s smile lingered, like the taste of honey on the tongue long after it had been swallowed.

What kind of life could they have anyways? Her office couldn’t drive off to a new location, if she decided she would rather be somewhere else. And what if she demanded just as much as the rest of the girls? Demanding the nice home, and expensive gifts, while wanting her to get it with half of the effort.
